Contenu

This small male head, delicately sculpted in dark-coloured wood, is of exceptional quality. The young man is wearing a short wig whose fine, wavy locks are decorated with double pearls at the ends. His face is brought to life by the large eyes outlined with makeup, which lengthen towards the temples.

Other inlaid elements, such as the eyebrows and the irises mounted in the white stone of the cornea, have since been lost. The only inlay that has been preserved is the makeup around the eyes. The square tenon at the base of the neck indicates that this head may have originally been made to fit a statue.

The way the face is carved and the delicacy of the man's elegant features are reminiscent of the artistic perfection typical of Amenhotep III’s reign, yet the introspective, even melancholic feel emanating from this portrait is more evocative of Tutankhamun's era.
