In a luminous atmosphere, a large bouquet of contrastingly-colored anemones attracts the eye and animates the space. The chimney where the flowers are found seems unbalanced, barely retained by the verticality of a standing figure at the right. Worked in small, vibrant strokes, the painting brings to mind the softness of a morning moment bathed in warm light. All elements are part of a mundane scene that has been transfigured by the attentive observation of the painter. However, the unusual framing of this interior scene and its subtle coloring lend a certain unreality to the elements. The strangeness of the painting is reinforced by an orthogonal network of lines that ties the elements together and by the frontality of the motif.
Created the year he moved to a new villa at Le Cannet, this painting is one of the numerous interior views painted by the artist at that time. Discovering each corner, working from different viewpoints, Bonnard worked to capture the specific magic of the place. He followed a personal pictorial approach, concentrating on the instant itself and the construction of a mental space where the present seems eternal.
